GENADENDAL

History

Genadendal (the Valley of Grace) is a small town nestled in the Riviersonderend

Mountains in the Western Cape. It inspired former President Nelson Mandela to

rename his official residence in Cape Town after it in 1995 (view on Youtube -

Mandela in Genadendal) and is the oldest mission station in South Africa. During its

golden years the town was a hub of home industry activity and is now a tranquil

cultural enclave with rich heritage.Genadendal is a town well known for its "firsts":

 

 

·                          It has the first formally constructed bridge over a major river at.  

·                          It was the first industrial town in South Africa and at one time. 

·                          It hosted the first teachers' training college in South Africa.

·                          It has the oldest pipe organ in South Africa.

·                          It has the oldest fire engine in South Africa. 

                     First kindergarten in South Africa was established here.

 

 

Genadendal is the oldest mission station in SouthAfrica (1738)

 

 

 

Directions

Feel free to come and visit our beautiful village that is set at the foot of

the Riviersonderende mountain, about 30 km from Caledon on the

R406. Just take a short left from the N2 before Caledon and you will

find us! Our beautiful village is a step back in history and we hope that

you will come and visit us one day! 

 

                              

 

 

GENADENDAL BRASS BAND - 150 years of brass evolution

The Genadendal Brass band plays a wide variety of music  from traditional

African and Kaaps to choral and classical.

From its inception, the Genadendal Brass Band has played a integral part in community activities and today renders an interdenominational service in the Overberg region (Greyton, Grabouw, Caledon, Villiersdorp, Hawston, Hermanus...)and accross the broader Western Cape. The bands performaces range from church services, brass band festivals, birthdays(ou nag) funerals and marriages to music evenings, cultural festivities, performances at homes of the elderly, private functions and even participation in the Cape Minstrel Carnival
