Our proud history Genadendal (the Valley of Grace) is a small town nestled in the Riviersonderend Mountains in the
Western Cape and is the oldest mission station in South Africa. During its golden years
the town was a hub of home industry activity and is now a tranquil cultural enclave
with rich heritage. It inspired former President Nelson Mandela( long live
Madiba, long live VIVA!!) to rename his official residence in Cape Town after it in 1995 (view on Youtube -Mandela in Genadendal) Genadendal is a town well known for its "firsts":
· It has the first formally constructed bridge over a major river at. · It was the first industrial town in South Africa and at one time.
· It hosted the first teachers' training college in South Africa.
· It has the oldest pipe organ in South Africa.
· It has the oldest fire engine in South Africa.
First kindergarten in South Africa was established here. Genadendal is the oldest mission station in SouthAfrica (1738) Directions Feel free to come and visit our beautiful village that is set at the foot of the Riviersonderende mountain, about 30 km from Caledon on the R406. Just take a short left from the N2 before Caledon and you will find us! Our beautiful village is a step back in history and we hope that you will come and visit us one day! And don’t forget to pop in @ our internet centre! Genadendal E Forum
