The Cape Access Project

E-power to the People

The Cape Access project is part of the centre for e-Innovation's strategy to stimulate economic competitiveness by providing the means for the citizen of the Western Cape to participate in the emerging knowledge economy. The strategy recognizes information and communication technology (ICT) as a key enabler of the economic development and growth of the Western Cape.

Cape Access aims to ensure that the public has access to the necessary technology infrastructure to interact with government, business and with each other, electronically.

Cape Access creates an information society amongst citizens who are poor, unemployed and in need of help. It enables any individual to create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge and to empower individuals and communities to achieve their full potential.

The goal of the Cape Access project is to provide computers with internet access in public libraries, schools, multi-purpose centers and other access points for use by anyone who needs it. Usage will be free of charge, but time limited on a daily basis. Users will be able to use emails and will be assisted to set up their own email address and mailbox. Each computer provides typical computer productivity tools, as well as access to the internet. Workshops will be hosted by the e-Community forums around the use of ICTS's, covering relevant issues such as pensions, tenders and job searches to name but a few. Each community needs for information will be determined during the first phase of the project.
